The Infinite Vision of Black Photographers: Jamel Shabazz

PEACE, LOVE & LIGHT!!

How often do you think about what came before you? How was it constructed? How was it used in its original form, or how it has evolved since creation. I mean like REALLY think about it. Since picking up the camera as a profession almost ten years ago, I realized I only knew photography on a surface level. Through my years of photography I have come to love street photography, through these images you really get to learn a lot about the culture of one’s environment. Sometimes images are the only words you have to describe a specific time. Since we are in the beginning of February and it is Black History Month!!! Let’s give flowers to those photographers that have paved the way. I have studied many of his images, and at times, even used them as a starting point to compose an image.

Jamel Shabazz is best known for his iconic photographs of the vibrant New York City street scene. He effortlessly captured Black joy and self-determination during the 1980s. His style was categorized as documentary, fashion, and street photography. What I have admired most about his pictures is the composition of the image. You can always tell what or who was the main focus of the image, as well as seeing the subject's environment in the image too. His images brought light to what the 80s were like in New York City. His color images were so vibrant and rich, while the black and white images told a story, all while giving you a feeling that you are reliving the experience.

The beauty of photography is that an image will always have many interpretations of what people see.
